Why this calculator is different

Capacity is constrained by the slowest resource.

The model calculates weighted stitch time from your own flat and cap minutes per 1,000 stitches, then compares machine throughput with operator hoop/load capacity. For synchronized multi-head machines it also applies a partial-batch utilization factor: an 8-head machine cannot keep eight heads busy when the average same-design order contains only five pieces.

partial head utilization = batch size ÷ (ceil(batch size ÷ heads) × heads)

Independent single-head machines do not receive that partial-batch penalty because each machine can run a different job. That does not make a modular fleet universally better: floor space, service, operator travel and capital cost still matter.

Why we ask for minutes per 1,000 stitches

Published machine speeds are maximum ratings, not guaranteed production output. Official current examples range from roughly 1,000 to 1,500 maximum SPM, while Brother separately publishes lower speed ranges for cap frames on one multi-needle model. Your measured minutes per 1,000 stitches are therefore more useful than a universal “real SPM” assumption.

Do not buy from the result alone. Verify sewing field, cap driver, hoops, voltage, floor space, service response, training, warranty and actual sample performance before purchasing.

Common questions

What is head utilization?

For a synchronized multi-head machine, it is the share of available heads actually carrying a piece across the modeled average same-design batch. A 5-piece batch on an 8-head machine cannot use all eight heads.

Why can operator load exceed 100%?

It means the modeled machine can demand hooped/loaded pieces faster than the entered operators can prepare them. The machine would wait unless work is pre-hooped, handling time falls or staffing rises.

Why are two independent single-heads included?

They can run different designs at the same time, which can outperform a synchronized two-head machine when the shop has many small mixed orders.

Should I use rated SPM?

Prefer your own measured minutes per 1,000 stitches on representative designs. Rated SPM is a hardware maximum and does not capture acceleration, trims, stops, caps or operator workflow.
